Education:

• PhD in 1992: PhD from the Maastricht Economic Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (MERIT), Faculty of Economics, University of Limburg (now Maastricht University). Title of dissertation: Uneven Growth Between Interdependent Economies. An Evolutionary View on Technology Gaps, Trade and Growth (published by Avebury). Supervisor: Luc Soete.
• Studied Economics from 1984 until 1988 at the University of Limburg (now Maastricht University) in Maastricht, The Netherlands, graduated cum laude.

• 2020 – present: Full professor of Macroeconomics of Innovation and New Technologies, MERIT, Maastricht University.
• 2012 – 2020: Director, UNU-MERIT & Dean, Maastricht Graduate School of Governance.
• 2008 – 2020: Full Professor of International Economics, Maastricht University.
• 2001 – 2011: Visiting Professor (‘Professor-II’) at the University of Oslo, Centre for Technology and Culture (TIK).
• 1998 – 2000: Research Professor of ‘Economics and Technology’ at MERIT, Maastricht University (0.4 fte) and Research Professor of ‘Economics and Technology’ at Eindhoven University of Technology, Faculty of Technology Management (0.6 fte).

Research interests:


The economics of technological change and innovation, economic growth and development, macroeconomics, evolutionary approaches to economics, international trade, structural change, technology spillovers, science and technology indicators, history of technological change and economic history.

• Honorary Doctorate degree from University of Oslo, 2014
• Best paper award in Technological Forecasting and Social Change 1999 (with Ivo De Loo).
• ‘Gunnar Myrdal Prize’ for PhD dissertation, 1993, awarded by the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy.
• SNS-Bank Limburg Prize for the best PhD dissertation at the University of Limburg, 1993 (awarded by a local Maastricht Bank)
